‘I Loved My Life!’ by Lillian (Lil) E. Jones

Lillian (Lil) E. Jones Jan. 25, 2012

As dusk settled on January 25, 2012, I left my earthly life to reunite with my "Diddie." I am where I want to be.

I was born in Binghamton NY to John and Anna Stermensky. I graduated from Binghamton Central High School and the Hartwick College School of Nursing under the US Cadet Nurse Corps Program. After graduating I worked at the Rome Hospital as a registered nurse for 30 years and Hospice for 20 years. I received my Bachelor of Science in Education from SUNY Oneonta after my children were grown.

I LOVED my husband, Did. While I was a student nurse, I met this young and handsome fella. He persuaded me to go out after I turned him down the first couple of times. On our first date we sat in his car in front of Candyland just people watching. We were married March 8, 1947. For over 60 years we shared more joy than we ever imagined.

I LOVED my family: my four children and their spouses, Lynda (Ross Barto), Doug (Tara Walsh), Kathy (Jerry Maurer), and David (Lynda Ruane); grandchildren, Suzanne, Shannon, Sommer, Tim, Heidi, Chris, Andy, Mary Kate, Jon, Pete, Tom, and Steve; and great-grandchildren, Frankie, Olivia, James, Will, Brody, Joshua, Caroline, Henry, Anthony, Anna, Kaitlyn, Kyle, Ryan and Carter. Also, my sister, Val and her husband, John Matias; my sisters-in-law, Helen and Corinne Stermensky, Agnes and Joyce Jones; and brother-in-law, Dannie Jones, and several nieces and nephews.

I LOVED nursing. In my 50 years in the profession I witnessed first cries and last breaths.

I LOVED to be Eucharistic Minister at St. Paul’s Church (as a charter member) distributing Communion to parishioners and those confined to their homes and hospital rooms.

I LOVED my pets (Tinker and Edna, the cats, who were my bedside companions) and the birds that frequented our backyard.

I LOVED to laugh at weddings, family gatherings, the bowling alley, bocce courts, the Avonmore, the Palisades, Heilig’s Tavern, "Mash," "Frazier," "Two and a Half Men," "Johnny Carson," and most recently "The Big Bang Theory."

I LOVED to cook. Our Christmas Eve meal wasn’t complete until my Swedish meatballs were on the table.

I LOVED to shop and did so for hours. It didn’t matter whether I was shopping for clothes or groceries. I could have been a professional shirt folder at any department store. Fashion was my passion.

I LOVED to travel and made trips to Australia, Morocco, England, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Germany, Austria, the Philippines, Greece, Hungary, Okinawa, the Panama Canal, and many states.

I LOVED my hobbies and interests, which included reading, golfing, bowling, playing bocce, downhill and cross country skiing, and swimming. I was a diehard NY Yankees fan.

I LOVED the many groups to which I belonged: Palm Branch of the Rome Twigs; Daughters of the Nile; Association of Operating Room Nurses (AORN); Eastern Star; Griffiss Ski Club; Trailblazers Snowmobile Club; Home Bureau; a basketball team; bowling leagues at Mohawk Lanes, Rome bowling Center and King Pin Lanes; bocce leagues at Toccolana Club; various golf leagues; and the Lake Delta Yacht Club (a charter member).

I LOVED MY LIFE!

Lil lived her life with boundless energy and limitless zest. She was predeceased by her husband, "Did"; grandson, Jeff Barto; brothers Joseph and John Stermensky; brothers-in-law "Bub" and "Hubie" Jones; and beloved pets Muffin and Tess.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, February 4, 2012, at 10 a.m. at St. Paul’s Catholic Church, 1807 Bedford Street, Rome, NY.

In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to Jervis Library, 613 N. Washington St., Rome NY 13440; Humane Society of Rome, P.O. Box 4572, Rome NY 13442; Hospice and Palliative Care Inc., 4277 Middle Settlement Road, New Hartford NY 13413; St. Peter’s Food Bank, P.O. Box 627, Rome NY 13442.

Special thanks to Dr. V. Kandiah and staff, visiting nurses, Hospice and Lil’s caregivers Linda and Peggy.

Arrangements by Strong and Burns Funeral Home, 401 N. George St.

[edit] Biography

Istvan was born in 1815. Istvan Balasz was the son of Istvan Balasz and Borbala Serfözö of Hoszureth, in the former county of Gomor. He was baptized at Krasznahorkaváralja, Hungary. ( now Krásnohorské Podhradie, Rožňava, Slovakia).

He passed away in 1852. Uncertain if he was married before he married Maria and as they married later in life, not certain if they had offspring together. He also was only married almost three years before he died.[1]

Lillian (Lil) E. Jones
Rome
I Loved My Life! by Lillian (Lil) E. Jones As dusk settled on January 25, 2012, I left my earthly life to reunite with my "Diddie". I am where I want to be. I was born in Binghamton, NY, to John and Anna Stermensky. I graduated from Binghamton Central High School and the Hartwick College School of Nursing under the US Cadet Nurse Corps Program. After graduating, I worked at the Rome Hospital as a registered nurse for 30 years and Hospice for 20 years. I received my Bachelor of Science in Education from SUNY Oneonta after my children were grown. I loved my husband, Did. While I was a student nurse, I met this young and handsome fella. He persuaded me to go out after I turned him down the first couple of times. On our first date, we sat in his car in front of Candyland just people watching. We were married March 8, 1947. For over 60 years, we shared more joy than we ever imagined. I loved my family: my four children and their spouses, Lynda (Ross Barto), Doug (Tara Walsh), Kathy (Jerry Maurer) and David (Lynda Ruane); grandchildren, Suzanne, Shannon, Sommer, Tim, Heidi, Chris, Andy, Mary Kate, Jon, Pete, Tom and Steve; and great-grandchildren, Frankie, Olivia, James, Will, Brody, Joshua, Caroline, Henry, Anthony, Anna, Kaitlyn, Kyle, Ryan and Carter. Also, my sister, Val and her husband, John Matias; my sisters-in-law, Helen and Corinne Stermensky, Agnes and Joyce Jones, and brother-in-law, Dannie Jones; and several nieces and nephews. I loved nursing. In my 50 years in the profession, I witnessed first cries and last breaths. I loved to be Eucharistic Minister at St. Pauls Church (as a charter member), distributing Communion to parishioners and those confined to their homes and hospital rooms. I loved my pets (Tinker and Edna, the cats, who were my bedside companions) and the birds that frequented our backyard. I loved to laugh at weddings, family gatherings, the bowling alley, bocce courts, the Avonmore, the Palisades, Heiligs Tavern, "Mash", "Frazier", "Two and a Half Men", "Johnny Carson" and most recently "The Big Bang Theory". I loved to cook. Our Christmas Eve meal wasnt complete until my Swedish meatballs were on the table. I loved to shop and did so for hours. It didnt matter whether I was shopping for clothes or groceries. She was predeceased by her husband, "Did"; grandson, Jeff Barto; brothers, Joseph and John Stermensky; brothers-in-law, "Bub" and "Hubie" Jones; and beloved pets, Muffin and Tess. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, February 4, 2012, at 10 a.m. at St. Pauls Catholic Church, 1807 Bedford Street, Rome, NY. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to Jervis Library, 613 N. Washington St., Rome, NY 13440; Humane Society of Rome, P.O. Box 4572, Rome NY 13442; Hospice and Palliative Care, Inc., 4277 Middle Settlement Road, New Hartford, NY 13413; St. Peters Food Bank, P.O. Box 627, Rome NY 13442. Special thanks to Dr. V. Kandiah and staff, visiting nurses, Hospice and Lils caregivers Linda and Peggy. Arrangements by Strong and Burns Funeral Home, 401 N. George St., Rome. - See more at: http://www.legacy.com/obituaries/uticaod/obituary.aspx?n=lillian-e-jon es-lil&pid=155726634#sthash.UzT7HtfQ.dpuf
